Main Requirements for Therapy Professionals

International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology

Image via Wikipedia

Becoming a therapist of any kind requires schooling and working at jobs related to the field. There are different levels of therapy that people can meet, each requiring a certain amount of skill and education.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs or speech therapists) all have a master’s degree; the standard educational obligation for this position. Some states employ different licensing or certification prerequisites, but all states regulate their SLPs.

Courses that must be taken to become an SLP include anatomy with emphasis on the parts of the body that perform speech and language, including swallowing. There are classes in the makeup of disorders, why and how they develop, as well as courses in sound and the principles of acoustics. Also taken are courses in the psychological side of language disorders and the effects they have on communication.

This is a Good Job to Have, if You Can Get It

People in speech pathology positions get good pay and work in clean, comfortable surroundings like an office, classroom, or at the chair side or bedside of a patient at home or in a clinical setting.

A dedicated student must work hard to get to fill one of these positions. But, finishing college and earning the degree isn’t the end of class. There are programs beyond college that many states require SLPs to enter as a prerequisite for licensure, and they are necessary for all qualified credentialing by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASLHA).

Different states have different rules, and some require certain tests be taken in order to get a job. Also, some states require previous experience before granting a license. There’s always continuing education in any kind of medicine. It’s worth it in the end, but don’t expect to take any short cuts.

Effect Of The Web On Education ? An Overview

Image via Wikipedia

Can the internet replace schools? Well, internet has grown at an immense pace and has affected practically every aspect of our lives. In such a scenario, it is not surprising that the impact of internet on the education sector is a hot topic.

In theory, kids can stay at home and use high-speed internet connections and videoconferencing facilities to attend classes as if they are in school. However, the advantages of interacting with other children of their own age outweighs convenience of the web. However, this does not mean the internet cannot have a positive impact on an individual’s education.

It is important to use the web to research for information. The web is fast becoming the repository of all human knowledge. The right search engine can help an individual explore all facets of a particular topic and find the right research method to adopt.

Once education is complete, the internet can help promote the skills and abilities of the person to potential employers. Education, for the sake of knowledge, is not of much use unless it is combined with practical and financial benefits. A person who studies without the help of internet may find himself at a disadvantage when compared to another person who has used the web for gaining knowledge and promoting his or her reputation.

Option of studying even after settling down in a job is always present. The internet makes this possible. Distance education and vocational courses will have a huge impact on the skill set of an individual even after the so-called student life has come to an end.

Best Gadgets for Students

The classroom is wherever you are these days. Whether you visit a college campus or whether you prefer online learning, being mobile is a necessity. In fact, smartphones are becoming a big part of the education system. Even high school campuses are realizing the power of eLearning.

Gadgets Students Should Have

  • Smartphone. As education and technology advance, students will be expected to own a smartphone to complete quizzes, read assignments and interact with their teachers. Some schools will provide the phone, but for those who have to buy their own, something like the prepaid blackberry curve is a good choice. It’s easy to use, and it is safe and secure for internet browsing. As a long time leader in phone technology, it has also become one of the more affordable smartphones.
  • Netbook. Although tablets are popular, the netbook is still the most practical way to do school work. It’s light and rugged, and it still has a keyboard. When typing essays and assignments, the intuitive design of the keyboard is a big time saver. There is a bit of a learning curve with the smaller design of the keypad, but it won’t take long to type quickly and accurately.

Digital camera. The smartphones definitely work for photos and videos, but if your education requires higher resolution and quality, owning a camera is a smart move.

The Student Budget

All of these “must have” gadgets are actually quite affordable. With the many advancements in technology, the competition among companies has made it possible to get phones and cameras for less than $100. Netbooks are very well priced, too. As textbooks disappear, gadgets will take over and save students money.

Technology in Education

Libraries are useful resources for adult learners.

Image via Wikipedia

Education is changing just like everything else because of advances in technology. Most of the change is good but we have to keep up with it.

Technology’s Affect on Adult Education

It use to be that if an adult wanted to go back to school they might need to brush up on a few things but they could be relatively successful. Today, adults returning to school might not even be able to find out the next reading assignment or know how to turn in an assignment. All the teacher has to say is, “Check my blog for tomorrow’s reading” or maybe “upload your assignment and email it to me” and the older student could be left scratching their head. A common class for this type of non-traditional student is a computer catch up class so they can learn how to communicate in today’s world of learning. Online classes can present an even greater challenge along with great flexibility for the older working student.

Online Courses for Non-Traditional Students

It is a fantastic opportunity available to older working adults to have so many opportunities available online. The programs and offered degrees are expanding exponentially. If the non-traditional student has the desire and is willing to obtain the know-how they can go all the way to a PhD through online programs. There are even financial aid programs waiting to be discovered by the dedicated seeker.

Continuing Education

Most professionals have some sort of ongoing education required to remain current in their fields. With online education on such a rise, many of these requirements can be found online as well making them more accessible to the working world.

Getting a Quality Online Education on a Budget

These days, with technology advancing almost every day, it’s become easier than ever to get an education online. The best part is that there are numerous options, so finding the best school and program for you isn’t as difficult as it used to be.

New online-specific universities have been popping up in ever-increasing numbers over the past few years. From the University of Phoenix to Capella University and Kaplan Online, the options are nearly endless. What’s even better about these types of universities is that they are offering some of the most popular online degrees, such as Business, Education, and Communications. They offer Bachelor’s degree as well as Master’s degrees. Some schools even offer online PhD programs!

Cost is a big factor in secondary education these days, especially with the current economic situation. While most schools offer tuition assistance, sometimes it just isn’t enough. The good thing here is that most online schools are very affordable and are willing to work out payment plans for tuition and expenses if necessary.

Because online education programs are relatively low in cost, many people are turning to that option instead of taking the traditional college or university route. Because of the high number of schooling options available online these days, be sure you have your goals clarified before you begin. Know what you want from a school will help you find the school that is best suited to your goals. Schools have different strengths and weaknesses, so by knowing what you want from a school, you’ll be better equipped to choose the best one.

Mobile Apps for Education

The world of apps for mobile devices has exploded. Whether it is Angry Birds or those that are more productive, the popularity of games and utilities for devices is considerable. The world of education is certainly not untouched by this market.

Anyone with a mobile device, such as a smartphone or Internet-enabled tablet, can enjoy these educational apps. If you’re new to mobile devices, you may not know some of these. For instance, “What is Blackberry?” may be asked, but this is just one of the leading brands of smartphones; they have recently entered the market of tablets, notably.

There are plenty of mobile apps that are specific to education, that may be enjoyed with such devices. Some have rather specific uses, such as prep for the GMAT, GRE, or other standardized tests. Others are more general and can help students improve in certain areas.

It should be noted that not all apps have to be specific to education for them to be relevant. Productivity apps, a very popular segment of apps, are incredibly useful to students. Take a task manager, for example: this can help the student keep track of due dates. The same applies to a note taking application, which can be crucial in planning a research paper, for example.

Mobile apps are incredibly relevant to the world of education. Whether specific to education or not, there are a number of types of apps that can allow the student to thrive. If you or someone close to you is a student, it may be time to realize these advantages to mobile apps in education.

Gadgets of Today

In Washington, D.C. there is an unassuming building on an unassuming street corner. In that building resides the International Spy Museum, a privately owned museum dedicated to the world of espionage. Inside are galleries displaying the practices, stories, and gadgets of spywork.

Spies have long used tools of their trade, disguised to look like the everyday and ordinary. Recording devices hidden in books, cameras disguised as a button or hidden in a buttonhole. During World War II, spies had maps hidden in decks of playing cards and hidden morse code machines.

In the museum, you may slip your hand into your pocket and feel your cell phone. A Blackberry is a perfect example. What is blackberry you ask?  A popular mobile device that also allows you to surf the web, check e-mail and download applications.  It is a gadget capable of doing more than every spy device in the enter Spy Museum. These phones can take pictures and send them to people thousands of miles away. They have access to maps of every city in the world, down to the street names. They can record sound, store massive amounts of data, and fit in your pocket.

Technology has truly skyrocketed. Humans are capable of communicating in dozens of new ways. This greatly aids in understanding each other, sharing ideas and successes, and growing the human family closer to one another. Think of it; hundreds of years of research and development in espionological technology, and now it is used to text pictures of a brand new baby to grandma. That’s so cool!

What’s next?  Where will technology take us in the next 50 years?

Your First Apartment

Ridgemoor Apartment Homes, Lakewood, Colorado

Image via Wikipedia

If you have never lived away from home before your first apartment is a big step towards independent living. However, it’s important not to rush into anything and the best way to avoid that is to follow some simple guidelines.

  • Whether you’re looking at top-class Atlanta apartments or budget Augusta lofts, book a time to have a look at the location. Make sure that everything in the ad matches up with the apartment.
  • When you go to see the apartment be sure to ask questions. Ask them things like: if they are willing to fix any faults you might find, if they allow pets, and what date you would be able to move in.
  • Be sure to keep all paperwork neat and organized.
  • Once you have signed the paperwork, but before moving day, arrange for all your utilities to be hooked up. Nothing is worse than spending your first night in your apartment in the dark.
  • When moving into your new apartment, be sure to have everything packed securely, and labeled correctly. Otherwise it will be difficult to unpack once you’re in your apartment.
  • Using a moving company or getting friends and family to help you is always a good idea.
  • If necessary, look into renting transportation as many companies that offer large vans for hire.
  • Make a budget and know what you need. Avoid frivolous spending when you go to the grocery store; take a list with you and keep within your budget every time.
  • Make the apartment feel like your own. Put up some artwork and family pictures. New curtains and lamps can really give it a homey touch.

The Benefits of the General Requirement Classes

Students taking a test at the University of Vi...

Image via Wikipedia

Many university students look at the general requirement classes as nothing more that a nuisance. After all, they know just what they want to be. They have researched how much schooling they will need as well as how much money they are going to make as soon as they begin work. But these classes do serve more of a purpose than just being a placeholder for a student’s time the first two years of college.

General requirement classes typically look to give students a foundation in things like writing and math. By now most of them have realized that without at least a basic knowledge in these areas, things aren’t going to go well career wise. Other classes are usually required, but students have some options in what they want to take. For example, they may need to register for something to meet a western civilizations requirement but there may be several different classes, each with its own focus, for them to choose from.

These choices are beneficial in that they give students a chance to explore different areas of study. They may find along the way that they enjoyed the history classes and plan to take it on as a major or minor. They may have gone in with a clear picture of wanting to be a teacher, but these classes give them exposure to different subjects they could potentially want to teach. These classes still give students choices but force them to look around and see beyond their original goals and aspirations. While some will still stick with their original plan, they have at the very least received a more well rounded education.

How do you make great apps that keep people engaged for hours on end?  The first thing you have to do is come up with a fabulous idea for a useful or fun app to share with others.  Then, you must have some degree of skill when it comes to writing code for great apps. For some people, writing code is completely intuitive. Others sweat blood and shed tears to learn more about how to write the code required to create great apps.

You must test and refine the app to make sure that it functions properly. All you really need to do to market a truly great app is upload it to the app marketplace and let others find it. If you give your first apps away for free, you can build a reputation as an app developer. From there, you’re only limited by your code.
